What Will You Learn in the Seven Principles Program?

The main goal of The Seven Principles Couples Program is to help couples strengthen their relationships in a variety of ways including deepening their love maps, fostering fondness and admiration, facilitating turning toward each other, accepting influence, solving solvable problems, overcoming gridlock, creating shared meaning, and maintaining gains.

Gottman has been the leading expert for close to 50 years on relational research. The best-selling book, “The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work” contains valuable information, personal assessment questionnaires and practical tools for improving your relationship. The workshop’s format is a series of short teaching units that are paired with plenty of personal couple time. You’ll have time to deepen your relationship, explore new skills and talk together about dreams and expectations.  Our goal is that after each class you’re re-connected and ready to apply these new skills in your daily lives.

This workshop is appropriate for couples just starting out on the marriage track or on the way toward the marriage world record.  This is a good workshop to re-connect, grow together and work on marital and family goals. In most instances this workshop is recommended for all couples as it enhances a good marriage and will provide skills to support a struggling relationship. This workshop will cover many of the skills learned in couples therapy.

FAQ & Details

Do we have to share our “dirty laundry”? No, and we especially want to guard your relationship by not “throwing each other under the bus.”  Instructor will take time in the first class to review how to maintain your privacy.  And yet, by sharing some things each attendee adds to the strength of the class and the growth of each couple enrolled. We encourage participation and have found ways to do it comfortably. We have so much to learn from each other!

Do my spouse and I have to be in the same physical space? The ideal is for the two of you to be in the same space at the same time for every class. There are invaluable little glances and touches that occur when you share the physical space. Occasionally having you in two different places might occur. This is of course allowed and with a few modifications (you each will need to stay in text contact with each other and use your phones to talk during the private couple time) you will be able to fully participate in the class.

Can I attend alone? You may not register for the class without your spouse planning to attend. Occasionally one spouse will have a conflict for a specific class and not be able to attend, in this instance one spouse may attend that class alone.

Do we have to be married to enroll?  The class is formatted to married couples and references in the materials will assume this. Engaged couples will also benefit. However, engaged couples and those in a serious relationship who are considering marriage, may do better with the SYMBIS class that is also offered.

What happens if we miss a class? Is there a make-up time?  No, there is not a make-up class or refunds for missed classes. Please make every effort to not miss class.

When can I expect the class materials to arrive?      Once you register then we will have the materials shipped directly to you; be warned Gottman takes 10-14 days to arrive!   (Oh NO!! What if we’re signing up at the last minute? Clinician will provide digital copies of the couple exercises for the first two weeks due to the slow delivery of these materials.)

What digital platform will be used and when will I get the link to participate? Instructor uses Zoom and will send the instructions to every attendee on how to access the class. This instructor does not use links but instead will provide the meeting room number and password which will be the same for every class and meeting with this instructor.

What if we decide to drop the class, can we get a refund?  After the second class has been held, there will be no refunds for unattended classes. The hardcopy materials are yours to keep and once ordered cannot be refunded.
